Early FA Cup exit set to cost Arsenal about £4.5m

Arsenal have lost roughly £4.5 million in season-ticket revenue as a result of their FA Cup upset defeat to Nottingham Forest.

The Gunners were knocked out of the FA Cup in the third round on Sunday night as Championship side Forest prevailed 1-0 thanks to a late goal from replacement Lewis Grabban.

Arsenal’s chances of winning the championship for a record 15th time were dashed, and the setback will cost the club about £4.5 million.

The first two home FA Cup matches were supposed to be included in season tickets this year, but that will no longer be the case.

As a result, fans can either receive a refund from Arsenal or have the amount owed removed from the purchase of their season ticket for the following season.

The amount payable varies depending on a fan’s seat location at Emirates Stadium, however, it averages around £50 for every cup game not completed. Given Arsenal’s 46,000 season-ticket holders, this corresponds to £4.5 million in income losses.

The Gunners were not at the top of their game against Nottingham Forest at the City Ground, who were worthy winners.

Arsenal, who made seven changes from their New Year’s Day loss to Manchester City, failed to register a single shot on target in the 90 minutes, and manager Mikel Arteta was not impressed.

“I’m really disappointed with the performance, first of all – not with the attitude, but how much purpose we had and what determination we showed to change the game when it’s difficult to play against [them] and the way they play,” he said.

“[We needed] more drive, more hunger to win at any cost in every single action. We were not there at our level today.

“I know – because I’ve been playing games like that for the last 18 years – how complicated it is to come here and the difficulties you’re going to face is no surprise. But when we do that, we have to face it in a different way.

“We didn’t have enough incisiveness, determination, and purpose to progress the ball with enough quality into those areas. When we had the chance to do that, we didn’t hit the target.

“When you don’t hit the target, it’s difficult to win a match.”
