Didier Deschamps on Kylian Mbappé’s France captaincy: “He doesn’t overdo it.”

Having been named captain back in March, Kylian Mbappé is expected to lead France out for the fourth time tomorrow night, as they take on Greece at the Stade de France as part of their Euro 2024 qualifying campaign.

Ahead of yet another summer of uncertainty with regard to his future at Paris Saint-Germain, the 24-year-old will be hoping to make it four wins in as many games for Les Bleus in 2023, and add to his 39 international goals so far.

Appearing before the press on Sunday evening, France manager Didier Deschamps was notably asked about Mbappé’s first few months as skipper. The former midfielder has indicated that the forward has had no issue in rising to the role:

“He’s a captain who’s completely at ease with the role. He makes sure to have discussions on the important points. It’s Kylian – everyone is grateful for him, he’s doesn’t overdo it. Luckily for you guys, he’s more often at press conferences. I’m having even more discussions with him, even if I did speak to him a lot beforehand. When the players have requests, he passes them on to me. But it’s not an extra weight for him, it’s happened naturally.”

Mbappé was involved on Friday night as the team limped to a half-hearted 3-0 win over Gibraltar, the PSG striker slotting home a penalty just before half-time in an otherwise quiet affair.
