Olympique de Marseille have confirmed the departure of David Friio. His departure will facilitate the arrival of Medhi Benatia, whose arrival is set to be announced imminently.
Friio arrived at Marseille as head of recruitment in 2020 before becoming technical director in 2021. He then later became the club’s sporting director, however, Friio has now become the latest to leave OM. Javier Ribalta also left the club last month amidst a restructuring of the club’s hierarchy.
In a short statement, Friio’s departure was confirmed: “Olympique de Marseille and David Friio have decided, by mutual consent, to end their collaboration. The club would like to thank David for his investment and wishes him all the success for the rest of his career.”
Benatia is expected to replace Friio imminently. The former Morocco international, who came through the ranks at the club without making a first-team experience, is at La Commanderie today ahead of joining the club. He won’t be a like-for-like replacement, according to L’Équipe. Benatia will be appointed as a sporting advisor with Les Phocéens, who currently sit 10th in Ligue 1 after 11 matches played this season.
