Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea has won the Premier League Player of the Month award for January, ahead of Jack Harrison of Leeds, West Ham’s Jarrod Bowen, Man City’s Kevin De Bruyne, Southampton’s James Ward-Prowse, and Wolves’ general, Joao Moutinho.
The Spaniard becomes the first goalie to win the monthly trophy since Southampton’s Fraser Forster did it in February 2016.
De Gea made an astonishing 22 saves in Manchester United’s four January matches, including five in the 1-0 loss to Wolverhampton Wanderers, seven in the 2-2 draw with Aston Villa, and then eight in the 3-1 victory against Brentford.
Additionally, he kept a clean sheet in a vital 1-0 victory over top-four opponents West Ham United.
De Gea has made the most saves overall in the Premier League this season, and has 84 points amassed so far, 13 more than his nearest rival, Illan Meslier (Leeds United).
After 361 Premier League appearances and 127 clean sheets, it is the 31-year-old’s first Player of the Month title.
