Christopher Nkunku: “I didn’t extend my contract to leave the club next year.”

Christopher Nkunku (24) extended his contract with RB Leipzig in June. The Frenchman signed a deal until 2026 with just one-year remaining on his previous deal despite interest from European clubs. Speaking to reporters, Nkunku made it known that he didn’t just sign an extension to leave in 2023 and for Leipzig to collect a fee.

“I deliberately extended my contract,” said Nkunku. “I didn’t extend my contract to leave the club next year. I know that I feel very comfortable at Leipzig. I still have work to do here.”

Nkunku enjoyed his best season in professional football to date. The Frenchman scored 35 and created 22 in 52 games across all competitions last season, earning him Bundesliga Player of the Year. Speaking on his award, Nkunku added: “I would like to thank the team. I couldn’t have played so well without my team. The guys helped me a lot. I’m happy to have won this title, but I share it with my teammates.”

The former PSG player excelled under head coach Domenico Tedesco, who took over from Jesse Marsch, last season. Under Tedesco, Nkunku contributed 34 goals (21 goals, 13 assists) in all competitions for RB Leipzig, helping them win the DFB Pokal vs Freiburg, their first major trophy.
