Christophe Galtier’s return to Nice as Paris Saint-Germain manager was inevitably the main storyline as the league leaders travelled down to the Côte d’Azur on Saturday night – and the hostile welcome the home fans treated him to made that clear.
After the Nice fans unfurled a banner insulting Galtier’s mother during the match, the coach went over to sarcastically applaud his former fans in the wake of his team’s 2-0 win, as reported by Get French Football News’ Luke Entwistle.
While shaking hands with his former teammates, Galtier notably exchanged words with defender Jean-Clair Todibo about the banner specifically, as captured by Canal+: “JC! Did you see the banner? Imagine if they did that to you.”
Speaking to the broadcaster in his interview shortly afterwards, the PSG manager gave a sarcastic answer when asked about the incident: “I went over to thank them for that wonderful welcome”
In his press conference later in the evening, Galtier was again irate about the banner, seemingly accusing the home fans of being ungrateful with regard to the job he did last season:
“Why did I react like that? Did you see [the banner]?! Did you read it?! Did you hear?! My mother is 83 years old, she’s recovering from cancer. Full stop. The work I did last season is the reason those people can watch European matches. Whatever people think, it’s the work we did last season, along with what Didier [Digard] has done, which means there are still European matches in Nice.”
