After his first campaign in the French capital was largely written off due to a long-term calf injury, this season has seen Sergio Ramos emerge as one of Paris Saint-Germain’s stalwarts – with the Spanish veteran’s high-level experience proving invaluable in the midst of a turbulent year for the club.
The former Real Madrid man’s contract, though, expires at the end of the season. Although the World Cup winner himself is keen on staying, the Ligue 1 leaders’ stance ostensibly depends on whether he can maintain his high level of performance for the remainder of the season. Despite middling showings against Lens and Rennes this spring, the defender was arguably the team’s best performer in the Champions League double header against Bayern Munich, and has already turned out 39 times in all competitions this year.
At his press conference this afternoon, manager Christophe Galtier has confirmed that discussions were underway between the club’s higher-ups and Ramos:
“When you have that kind of honours list at that age, you have every chance of doing well. He brings his experience and his high standards. He’s an important player in the dressing room. There have been discussions between him and the management. I’m very happy with his season and what he brings to the table on matchday, but also on a daily basis. He’s a role model that all of our young players should follow.”
