SC Freiburg play Eintracht Frankfurt on Wednesday in a game that sees fifth play third. Both teams find themselves on 30 points.
After a very strong start to the season, Freiburg restarted the year in the worst possible way losing 6-0 away to Wolfsburg. Freiburg struggled to be clinical in front of goal, registering one shot on target compared to Wolfsburg’s 10. They will hope to make amends against one of the Bundesliga’s most in-form teams.
Frankfurt on the other hand continued where they left off, beating Schalke 3-0. Jesper Lindstrøm opened the scoring for Frankfurt with an assist from Randal Kolo Muani in the 22nd minute. Then later in the 84th minute Rafael Santos Borré scored his second goal of the season. Borré himself would then assist Aurelio Buta who scored his first goal for Frankfurt in the 91st minute. The win took Frankfurt into second leaving them five points off of Bayern Munich in first.
In this game, you have one of the best defences in the league against one of the best attacks in the league. Freiburg have kept eight clean sheets this season, which is the most in the Bundesliga. Frankfurt have the second-best attack in the Bundesliga, only bettered by Bayern Munich. Frankfurt has benefited from the breakthrough of Kolo Muani this season as well as the continued development of Lindstrøm whilst the likes of Daichi Kamada have continued their form from last season.
Kolo Muani has been one of the standout players in the Bundesliga this season, scoring five and assisting 10. His free signing from Nantes in France puts as the front runner for signing of the season. This form earned him a late call up for France’s World Cup squad where he was key in France’s comeback in the final against Argentina. The Frenchman has attracted interest from some of Europe’s biggest clubs.
Last season the results were split, Frankfurt won the first meeting 2-0 with goals from Lindstrøm and Filip Kostic. Freiburg won the second meeting 2-1 with goals from Vincenzo Grifo and Nils Petersen.
