Stade Brestois have found themselves on the wrong end of some questionable refereeing decisions in recent matches, and according to L’Équipe, the club’s president, Denis Le Saint, will send a letter to the governing bodies, requesting that VAR be scrapped.
Brest’s 2-0 loss against AS Monaco, just before the international break, was notably punctuated by controversial decisions. In a post-match press conference, attended by Get French Football News, manager Eric Roy, as well as Jérémy Le Douaron, were incensed by the decisions, describing the refereeing performance as “scandalous” and “incompetent”.
“The overriding emotions are frustration, incomprehension, anger. We don’t know why VAR is called upon when the initial decision is in favour and not when it’s the other way around. In French football, we decide a lot of close matches, like tonight’s match, not necessarily with refereeing decisions, but VAR decisions […] Maybe it’s incompetence, I don’t know,” said Roy.
His opinions are shared by the club’s hierarchy, notably sporting director Grégory Lorenzi and president Le Saint. The latter will send a letter to Vincent Labrune, the president of the Ligue de Football Professionnelle (LFP), demanding that the authorities scrap VAR. It is s strong stance, but one that is unlikely to elicit any kind of action.
