According to Sport Bild, Borussia Mönchengladbach are willing to forego any transfer fee in order to retain Yann Sommer, even if it means he leaves for free in 2023.
It’s reported and comes as no surprise that Gladbach want to retain their captain and number one goalkeeper.
Entering the last year of his contract, Sommer has been heavily linked to a move to French club Nice where he would be reunited with former Foals head coach Lucien Favre.
Other reports have also suggested that the 33-year-old has verbally agreed to join Nice who also have the pull of the Europa League.
It’s clear that Gladbach are willing to run the risk of Sommer leaving on a free next year if it means having him for the upcoming Bundesliga campaign.
Coach Daniel Farke recently highlighted the importance of the goalkeeper: “I’m glad that Yann Sommer is joining us in the middle of next week. He’s an outstanding goalkeeper and a great guy, a shining light for Borussia. It’s important that we have him with us in the group. I am happy that he is coming to us soon.”
Sommer is due to meet up with the rest of the Gladbach squad next week to begin pre-season training.
The next few weeks will prove vital in the future of Yann Sommer.
