Bayern Munich have this evening confirmed that Matthijs de Ligt (24) suffered a capsule injury in his left knee during the club’s training camp in Faro, Portugal.
The extent of De Ligt’s injury was revealed after an MRI scan was carried out on site by Bayern’s medical team and as a result, the Dutchman will now be sidelined for the foreseeable future.
It’s not the best news for De Ligt, who has already missed six Bundesliga games through injury this season and while Kim Min-jae is representing South Korea at the AFC Asian Cup, the 24-year-old was expected to deputise for his teammate alongside Dayot Upamecano in central defence.
Will Matthijs de Ligt’s injury force Bayern Munich’s hand in the transfer market?
As reported yesterday, De Ligt isn’t 100% satisfied with his situation at the Rekordmeister after falling behind to Kim and Upamecano. With interest coming from Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United, a summer rule can’t be moved out.
Perhaps even more so with Bayern actively using the winter transfer window to improve on their defence. The Rekordmeister made a late move to hijack Tottenham Hotspur’s transfer of Radu Drăgușin, but failed to do so, while Bayern are working hard on bringing Paris Saint-Germain’s Nordi Mukiele to the Allianz Arena.
