Kicker reports that the bosses at Bayern Munich would have preferred to sign OGC Nice goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel over Yann Sommer.
Although Bayern had shown interest in Sommer, Schmeichel would have signed for six months in January which would be the time period Manuel Neuer would take to recover while it would also leave the door open for Alexander Nübel to return when his loan ends at AS Monaco.
However, former coach Julian Nagelsmann wanted a German-speaking keeper as well as a keeper who would sign for longer than six months, hence the pursuit of Sommer. The 34-year-old signed a two-and-a-half-year contract at Bayern when he joined from Borussia Mönchengladbach in the winter for €8m.
It is reported that Sommer has not impressed since his move and a change in goalkeeper to Sven Ulreich, who the rest of the Bayern team know well, would not be a surprise.
Neuer is currently on target for his comeback and under Thomas Tuchel is likely to reclaim his number-one spot. Where this leaves Sommer is unknown, as the 34-year-old will want to have as much game time as possible with the European Championships next year to maintain his number one spot as Switzerland goalkeeper as compatriot Gregor Kobel contiunes to perform well at Borussia Dortmund.
