Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone admits Champions League elimination is disappointing.
Last night’s 2-2 draw with Bayer Leverkusen ended hopes of reaching the round of 16, with Yannick Carrasco failing from the spot late on.
Simeone later said: “It summarises a little what our game was up to today in this area. Everything has cost us a lot, in many of the games that we did not add we could have scored a few more goals with some forcefulness.
“The final reflex with the missed penalty, the shot against the crossbar and the shot against Carrasco sums it up. It is clear that we are not looking for excuses, we lacked doing things. In this match there was a second half of the highest level, good play, scoring situations, counterattacks well saved by Oblak, leaving the team everything at all times. It annoys you not being able to direct the possibility of continuing in Porto.
“Yannick had a great game, he returned to his best level. It’s a satisfying note in a lot of situations. The good performance of De Paul, of Kondogbia, the effort of Molina… Within a hard defeat, a not positive moment, there are good things.
“There is the possibility of getting with the victim or continue fighting.”
