Athletic Bilbao coach Marcelino was delighted with his players after victory over Elche.
Marcelino praised the Lions’ professionalism after their 2-1 victory against Elche CF on Sunday afternoon.
He believes the victory vindicates his opinion that Athletic are on the up as they move into the closing stages of LaLiga Santander 2021/22.
“For a long time, I’ve been saying the team is doing well,” Marcelino said during his post-match press conference. “Today we were well organised and that allowed us to take the initiative. The team has been showing great improvements of late.”
Goals from winger Alex Berenguer, with a stunning scissor-kick goal, and striker Asier Villalibre ensured the Lions took home all three points.
“When we play like that, you can’t be angry,” Marcelino added.
“Maybe we could have finished off the match in the first half. You always want to finish the game off early, but it wasn’t to be. It’s difficult to play with the scores at 1-0 because any mistake could lead to the opponents punishing you.
“I also would have liked it to finish 2-0. We’ve been struggling to keep a clean sheet lately and it’s a shame that our opponents can do so much with so little. But overall, we did a good job.”
