Barcelona Femeni face Real Madrid Femenino tomorrow.
It’s set to be a historic night.
Not only is it the quarter-final of the Women’s Champions League but it’s going to take place at a sold-out Camp Nou.
Barcelona, the reigning champions of Europe following last season’s victory over Chelsea Women, won the first leg 3-1.
Olga Carmona opened the scoring for Madrid only for second-half goals from Alexia Putellas (two) and Claudia Pina to render it meaningless in terms of the result on the night.
But it might not be meaningless in terms of the tie.
Madrid come to Camp Nou as rank outsiders but their spirited performance in the first leg will give them hope. Whatever the result it’s sure to be a magical evening for women’s football.
“Tomorrow’s match will inspire many people,” Putellas said in comments carried by Diario Sport.
“They will see women play at Camp Nou and I’m sure that in the future the fruits of that will be reaped. Many girls will dream of being able to play on such a special stage.
“It could be a before-and-after moment in women’s football.”
Barcelona are, without doubt, the strongest team in the women’s game. They’re top of the Primera Division with a perfect record of 25 wins from 25 games played. 75 points from a possible 75.
