Bayern Munich’s Hasan Salihamidžić has confirmed that Alexander Nübel will not return to the Rekordmeister in 2023. However, according to Kicker, they want to extend his contract at the Bundesliga club beyond 2025 with a view to eventually replacing Manuel Neuer.
Speaking in an interview with Sky Germany about Nübel’s return, Salihamidžić said: “It won’t happen in 2023. After that, you have to see. I don’t need to bring in a competitor for Manuel Neuer. He’s our captain, he doesn’t need anyone to push him. We spoke to Alex about how he wants things to continue and at some point we have to make decisions.”
Per Kicker, Salihamidžić visited Nübel in Monaco last Thursday and had dinner. In the near future, all parties will discuss a proposal to extend the German’s contract beyond 2025 but are wary that Nübel has aroused interest from Premier League clubs.
A potential stumbling block would be if Neuer (36) decides he wants to extend his contract beyond 2024. If that is the case, at 26, Nübel will likely seek first team football elsewhere.
Nübel has somewhat impressed since joining AS Monaco on a two-year loan in July 2021. With 71 games across all competitions, the former Schalke ‘keeper as kept 20 clean sheets.
Currently deputising for Neuer, who made his return for Bayern at the weekend after missing their last eight games, is Sven Ulreich. The 34-year-old has a contract until the end of the season but Salihamidžić would also be open to an extension.
