Montpellier HSC have struggled this season with their loss to Olympique de Marseille last weekend, leaving the club on the edge of the relegation playoff spot.
Their only victory in the league in 2024, came at the expense of fellow strugglers FC Metz, while a weekend tie against RC Strasbourg Alsace will be a crucial game at the bottom of the table as both clubs desperately search for points.
Yet, club president Laurent Nicollin laments that Montpellier have found themselves in this situation after the season started well for the team, and points to the incident that saw the Clermont Foot game abandoned as the reason for their downward trajectory.
Montpellier slide down the table
On the 8th of October, the match was called off after a firework was thrown by Montpellier fans and landed next to Mory Diaw (30). The Clermont goalkeeper was then stretched off the pitch and a match that Montpellier were winning 4-2 was abandoned.
Nicollin speaking to Amazon Prime explained, “The abandonment did a lot of damage to heads and spirits. Honestly, if the match had been completed and we had won, I think we would have been much higher in the standings. We make do, we must not feel sorry for ourselves. We need to go forward.”
