Speaking following Newcastle’s 1-1 draw against Paris Saint-Germain at the Parc des Princes, Eddie Howe expressed his disappointment at referee Szymon Marciniak, who awarded the hosts a penalty in injury team for a handball on Tino Livramento. The Englishman was asked whether he felt a sense of injustice at the decision, at a press conference attended by Get French Football News editor George Boxall.
“Yes, I do [feel a sense of injustice]. In my opinion it’s the wrong decision,” began Howe. “The speed of the ball is something really important and isn’t something that is taken into account you see it slown down [on the replay]. It was a poor decision which obviously came at a vital moment in the game.”
“I was fearing the worse because it was the third or fourth time the there was pressure on the referee in the game [to award a penalty for PSG], which shouldn’t happen as every decision should be taken on its own merit.”
‘PSG played well’ says Howe
The Magpies boss also commented on the performance of his opponents, adding “I thought PSG played very well, it’s no surprise their their quality players that can hurt you. We believed we could create chances and we created quite a few, we then had to accept our role of defending [the 1-0 lead], and we defended well.”
