Gianluigi Buffon will be remembered as one of the greatest goalkeepers of all time when – or perhaps we should say, if – he retires.
The Italian celebrates his 45th birthday on Saturday but is still playing professional football.
Buffon returned to his first club Parma in 2021 following a second spell with Juventus and is still playing for the Serie B outfit.
In fact, Buffon hit the headlines earlier this month after making an incredible save while playing a cup game against Inter Milan.
Even Edin Dzeko stood and applauded as the veteran shot-stopper added another fine save to his collection.

As well as a top ‘keeper, Buffon is also the consummate professional.
He has the respect of everyone involved in the game – with the possible exception of referee Michael Oliver – and has shown his class on countless occasions throughout his illustrious career.

Buffon’s reaction when Italy fans booed France national anthem
For example, in September 2016, Buffon was deservedly hailed for his reaction when Italy fans booed France’s national anthem ahead of a friendly at the Stadio San Nicola in Bari.
As La Marseillaise was played, some Italy fans reacted by booing and whistling.
But the boos and whistles were soon replaced by cheers and applause – all thanks to Italy’s revered goalkeeper.
After hearing the disrespectful reaction to France’s anthem, Buffon took matters into his own hands, clapping and encouraging his teammates to join in – which they did.
Before long, most of the stadium were applauding, drowning out the boos in the process.

It’s little moments like this that have helped him to earn the respect of all of his colleagues in football.
When will Gianluigi Buffon retire?
And although he’s now in his mid-40s, it doesn’t seem that Buffon has any plans to hang up his gloves just yet.
“I could retire at 55, I spent 10 years at Parma in my first life, then 20 at Juventus,” he told reporters, per Goal, in 2022.
“I’ve been thinking about retirement for 10 years, but I’ve always continued.
“I’ve had important experiences that helped me to know the world of football, but I am not sure I will remain in this world after retirement. Perhaps I could try something else.”
