Players and fans rally around Borussia Dortmund’s Sebastien Haller who is diagnosed with a testicular tumour

Following Borussia Dortmund’s 1-3 defeat to Valencia on Monday, Sébastien Haller complained of feeling unwell and medical examinations revealed a testicular tumour on Tuesday.

Haller is now undertaking further examinations in a specialised medical centre. There have been several cases of testicular tumours in the Bundesliga recently.

Haller, a record signing for Bundesliga club Borussia Dortmund, had complained of feeling unwell after training on Monday morning in Bad Ragaz, Switzerland. During the course of the day, intensive medical examinations revealed the tumour.

The 28-year-old Ivory Coast international has already travelled back to Dortmund. “We will do everything in our power to ensure that he receives the best possible treatment,” said sporting director and former club captain Sebastian Kehl. Further examinations will take place at a specialised medical centre in the coming days.

It was only after the evening test against Valencia (1-3) in nearby Altach (Austria) that the team was also informed about the illness of their teammate and social media has been filled with messages of support from fans and teammates alike for the French-Ivorian striker including from his teammates who sent a group photo holding up three of Haller’s number 9 shirts.

There have been several cases of testicular tumours in the Bundesliga recently. Last week, Hertha BSC’s Marco Richter (24) was also diagnosed with a testicular tumour. As the Berlin Bundesliga club announced on Tuesday, the player will have to undergo surgery and will not be available for training.

At Union Berlin, Timo Baumgartl (26) is currently hoping for a comeback. He underwent a cancer operation in May due to a tumour in his testicles. He reported that he had completed all chemotherapies and was doing well, although his hair had fallen out.

Haller played with Marco Russ at Eintracht Frankfurt, who also overcame testicular cancer diagnosed in 2016.

Club managing director Hans-Joachim Watzke expressed his support for Haller. “We are all in a state of shock, of course, our thoughts are with Sébastien and his family. The most important thing for him and his family is that he gets well again soon.”

Borussia Dortmund’s London fan club were just one of many to send a card to the Ivory Coast international and post a message of support on their Social media.
