Jamie Carragher has claimed that Villarreal’s win over Bayern Munich shows the flaw of the European Super League.
The Spanish minnows bested the best team in Germany 2-1 on aggregate, after a battling 1-1 draw in Munich in the second leg of their quarter-final clash.
The Yellow Submarines are back in the semi-finals of Europe’s elite competition for the first time since 2006, when they were knocked out by Arsenal.
“What a result for Villarreal & another reason to show why the Super League was bulls***,” Liverpool legend Carragher wrote on social media.
The European Super League is a concept championed by several top clubs, such as Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal, Real Madrid and Barcelona, that would see the top teams in Europe compete in a semi-closed league that runs throughout the year.
The other Champions League quarter-final saw Real Madrid squeak past Chelsea, while Manchester City face Atlético Madrid and Liverpool take on Benfica on Wednesday.
