In this new weekly feature, hosts of the Gegenpressing podcast Stefan Bienkowski and Manu Veth face off with their predictions for the forthcoming Bundesliga matchday fixtures. It’s three points for a correct score and one point for a correct result. Who will come out on top at the end of the season?
Stefan’s game of the weekend: Stuttgart v Borussia Dortmund – This weekend’s Bundesliga action kicks off with a cracker as Dortmund head south in search of redemption, after a proper thumping from RB Leipzig last weekend. Stuttgart are without their star striker, but they have looked much better in recent weeks and have dragged themselves out of the relegation spots. And with murmurs of his head on the chopping board, Marco Rose and his team will be determined to pick up all three points. Either way, it’s two teams that will be keen on picking up a win and that should make for a fantastic contest.
Manu’s game of the week: Hertha v Union – Very hard to look beyond the Berlin derby. This game has always been about the East vs West divide. I’m not sure that narrative still holds true today. Union are now very much the inner-city club whereas Hertha are now the club of the suburbs. Also, I think Union Berlin have surpassed Hertha as the club with the most members of any sports club in Berlin. Although Union haven’t looked convincing in the last few weeks they are still in the race for Europe, while Hertha need every point in their fight against relegation. By the way, another big game to watch will be the Sunday match between Leipzig and Hoffenheim.
Stefan’s full predictions:
Stuttgart 1-2 BVB
Bayern 2-0 Augsburg
Wolfsburg 0-0 Bielefeld
Koln 2-0 Mainz
Furth 0-2 Gladbach
