Russia bids to host Euro tournament despite FIFA ban

Russia has reportedly joined other federations looking to host either the Euro 2028, or 2032.

This comes despite the country being suspended by FIFA following the invasion of Ukraine.

“We are going to file a bid for hosting of the 2028 and 2032 European Championships,” RFU board member Sergei Anokhin said on broadcaster Match TV.

The country hosted the 2018 World Cup, with the iconic Luzhniki Stadium hosting the final match.

“We are sending the declaration today,” Dyukov said. “We assume that Russia is already prepared to host large-scale competitions. We have the experience.”

The deadline for expressions of interest was set for today, Wednesday, with the UK and Ireland the frontrunners to host the 2028 tournament.

The deadline to submit final bid dossiers is April 2023, with a decision by the UEFA executive committee set for September 2023.

“We reserve the right to enter a bid,” Dyukov said. “This option doesn’t cost anything. And you can’t refuse it if it isn’t expensive.”

Alongside Russia, perennial bidders Turkey have also been credited with interest.
