Chicago Cubs owners launch bid to buy Chelsea

Chicago Cubs owners, the Ricketts family, have become the latest to show interest in buying English club Chelsea.

A statement from the family on Wednesday said the family is looking at forming a consortium before the March 18 deadline.

The London club is currently up for sale following sanctions on owner Roman Abramovich in the wake of Russia’s invasion of neighbours Ukraine.

“The Ricketts family, owners of the Chicago Cubs, can confirm they will be leading an investment group that will make a formal bid for Chelsea Football Club this Friday,” the family confirmed in an original statement.

“As long-time operators of an iconic professional sports team, the Ricketts Family and their partners understand the importance of investing for success on the pitch, while respecting the traditions of the club, the fans, and the community.

“We look forward to sharing further details of our plans in due course.”

The Ricketts family bought the Cubs for $845 million in 2009 and tasted glory in 2016 as the franchise won its first World Series title since 1908.

They join a number of other potential buyers, including billionaire Nick Candy, MMA star Conor McGregor, and Saudi-based Media Group.
