Steven Gerrard has stated categorically that Aston Villa will not get Luis Suarez before the January transfer window closes.
Earlier this week, rumors in Spain stated that Gerrard had discussed a transfer to Villa Park with Suarez and that the Uruguay international was seriously considering a return to the Premier League.
Suarez’s current deal with Atletico Madrid ends at the end of the season, and the striker is said to have turned down offers from Palmeiras, Corinthians, and Atletico Mineiro.
However, Gerrard is convinced that Suarez would not join Villa until the season is up.
‘We’re not after a center-forward in this window. That’s as clear as I can be,’ Gerrard said on Friday.
‘I think during these windows everyone puts two and two together and a lot of names are bandied around and stuff, but I obviously know Luis extremely well.
‘He’s top class and has been a world-class footballer throughout his career so I understand the links but we’re not after a center-forward, whether it be Luis or anybody else in this window.’
Following his surprising departure from Barcelona, Suarez helped Atletico Madrid win La Liga last season, but despite scoring seven goals in La Liga so far this season, the 34-year-old is struggling.
Suarez hasn’t scored in his last 11 outings and came on as a substitute in Atletico’s 2-0 Copa del Rey loss to Real Sociedad on Wednesday.
