Southampton fullback Walker-Peters: Our defence will be sorry after Grimsby goals

Kyle Walker-Peters offered no excuses after Southampton’s FA Cup defeat to Grimsby Town at St Mary’s.

The fullback says Saints are now eager to bounce back ahead of their Premier League clash with Leicester City on Saturday.

“I thought we started really well,” admitted the defender. “We really controlled the game.”

“We didn’t really create enough chances, but I always felt like we were going to score, and we were in control until we dropped off a bit, didn’t keep the pressure high and they went away the other end and we gave away a bit of a sloppy penalty.

“I didn’t really see the second [penalty]. But if there’s VAR and they give it then there must have been something in it. It’s something that Lyanco and Duje will definitely be sorry about but they know those things can’t happen because we need to win every game possible.

“I think the reaction was good. It’s what you want to see from your teammates and from the people that came on. Eager to change the game but it’s always tough when you go 2-0 down to a lower league team because they’re going to defend everything with their lives. Credit to Grimsby, they did that.

“We have to focus on the league because we want to stay in it. Every game is vital, we need the three points and we’ve got to take any positives from this game and try and put it into the game on Saturday.

“I always say no game in the Premier League is easy. I expect a tough game and I know they lost yesterday so they’ll be eager to get a win as well. We’ll be right up for it and hope to win.”
