Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema set a new record on Monday night as he netted a brace in their win over Mallorca.
Benzema broke Thiery Henry’s scoring record by becoming the all-time French scorer as he took his tally to 413 goals. The Frenchman scored from the spot, making it 2-0 for Madrid as he netted his 412th goal, to go one above Henry. In the 82nd minute, Benzema grabbed his brace before he was subbed off after picking up a knock.
Speaking after the game, Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti said, “We will look at it in the next few days. They don’t seem like very serious things. Rodrygo was a knock, [Ferland] Mendy had felt something in his adductor and Karim, after a jump, didn’t feel good. We’ll see if they can recover for Sunday.”
The win saw Madrid go 10 points clear of second-placed Sevilla, giving them a sizeable cushion over Barcelona.
Victory took Madrid 10 points clear of Sevilla at the top of La Liga and gives them a sizeable cushion over Barca despite the Catalan club’s recent uptick in form.
“We have the advantage and it’s good at this point in the season,” said Ancelotti.
“We have to think about winning on Sunday, that’s all.”
The Los Blancos will now host Barcelona at Santiago Bernabeu over the weekend in the El Clasico.
