Real Madrid president Florentino Perez was delighted after seeing the team win the Supercopa de Espana final.
Real won 2-0 in Riyadh against Athletic Bilbao.
“Without wanting to brag, they’re the best players in the world in their positions,” Florentino said of goalscorer Luka Modric and Thibaut Courtois, who saved a penalty.
“Modric is in enviable form, it’s worthy of winning the Ballon d’Or again.”
Carlo Ancelotti brought Marcelo on in the final minutes in a touching gesture, allowing the Brazilian to equal Paco Gento’s record of 24 trophies as a Real Madrid player on the pitch.
“Marcelo is a legend,” Florentino said.
“For him to receive an ovation is obvious, and I’m happy he received it in a place with so many Madridistas.”
With the first piece of silverware of the season wrapped up, the president wants to add more.
“We want to win everything, always,” Florentino said.
“We’ve been taught that since we were young. This year marks 60 years since I became a member, and that’s how we were taught.
“I work along the lines that Santiago Bernabeu set for us and I’m happy to have won the first trophy of the season.
“It means a lot. We’ve made changes, we’re ushering in a new era with a coach who knows the club very well. We’ve changed out defence and we’ve had really good results so far.
“We’ve found our new direction and we want to win.”
