Raphaël Guerreiro on Borussia Dortmund’s French Connection: “The boys are important to me.”

Speaking in an interview with Sport1, 28-year-old defender Raphaël Guerreiro discussed the French connection at Borussia Dortmund with several players speaking the language.

At Borussia Dortmund, there’s a ‘French Connection’ with you, Axel Witsel, Thomas Meunier, Thorgan Hazard and Dan-Axel Zagadou – how is your relationship with each other?

The boys are very important to me. It’s nice for me that we have so many French speaking players in the squad. Our group also includes Manuel Akanji and Roman Bürki. We all sit next to each other in the dressing room, are often together and do a lot of things and just have a lot of fun. But that doesn’t mean we don’t do things with players who speak German or English. It’s very harmonious overall.

Is French also the main language at the club?

No, that’s actually English. When I came to Borussia Dortmund six years ago, it was still German. In the meantime, we mainly speak English because many foreigners have joined the team. In smaller groups, we then use our own languages. And of course a lot of German is spoken. It’s a mix.

It seems like you don’t like being the centre of attention, at least on the outside. You don’t often give interviews either, how so?

I don’t speak in the media that often and that’s a deliberate choice. I just want to kick the ball and don’t like being the centre of attention afterwards. In the dressing room on the other hand, I’m much more active. I can raise my voice and occasionally speak up.
