Paris Saint-Germain were dumped out of the Champions League at the hands of Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich. Les Parisiens failed to overturn a one-goal deficit from the first leg, conceding a further two goals at the Allianz Arena on their way to losing 3-0 on aggregate.
As Stats Foot show, the numbers behind their humbling defeat not only reflect badly on PSG but also on their manager Christophe Galtier, who has an at best chequered and at worst abysmal record in European competition.
0 – PSG were in the only team in the Round of 16 of the Champions League to have failed to keep a clean sheet in any of their games in the competition this season.
2016 – PSG haven’t progressed in a Champions League tie that has featured a crowd since beating Chelsea on 9th March 2016. Les Parisiens reached the Champions League final in what was a competition behind closed doors due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
2005 – Galtier became the first PSG manager since Laurent Fournier in the 2004/05 season not to reach the quarter-finals of any cup competition in his first season. However, up to and including the 2019/20 season, there was an extra cup competition, La Coupe de la Ligue, which no longer exists.
2007 – PSG became the first French club since Lille OSC in 2007 to lose both the first and second leg of a Champions League Round of 16 match without scoring.
20 – Galtier has won only 20 of his 58 games in European competition as a manager. In that time, he has lost 19 and drawn another 19 games.
6 – PSG have already lost six games in 2023 in just 15 games. Les Parisiens lost just four of 46 games in 2022. The club lost 10 in 61 in 2021.
8 – PSG have lost eight of their last 10 second-legs in Champions League knockout rounds. Their only win in that time has come against Dortmund, whilst the reigning Ligue 1 champions also drew against Barcelona.
5 – Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappé only exchanged five passes during the whole of the second leg against Bayern Munich, highlighting PSG’s creative deficiencies.
