PSG players practised penalties ahead of Bayern Munich clash

During PSG’s last training session at the Allianz Arena yesterday, several Parisians, including Kylian Mbappé and Sergio Ramos, shot from the penalty spot without specifically training for a penalty shootout drill, according to a report from L’Equipe. Nevertheless, PSG’s goalkeepers have been briefed on the eventual penalty takers at Bayern Munich and their shooting habits from the spot. For the Champions League last 16 second leg tie between Bayern Munich and PSG to go to penalties, Les Parisiens must have a one-goal lead at the end of extra-time, whatever the scoreline may be as the away goal rule has been binned.

PSG head coach Christophe Galtier explained in his pre-game press conference he did not rule out this Champions League decider to go to penalties. “Training is one thing, but after a 120-minutes-long game and in front of a home team crowd, it’s something else, the environment is totally different, there is a psychological side to it”, assessed Galtier. The PSG head coach did give a few hints regarding his strategy for choosing the shooters in the event of a penalty shootout. According to him, the best penalty takers must step up first, because no one knows how long a penalty shootout can turn out to be.
