PSG 1-0 Real Madrid: Champions League 21/22, Last 16 First Leg – 15/2/22

PSG:

Gianluigi Donnarumma, 5

Achraf Hakimi, 5

Marquinhos, 5

Presnel Kimpembe, 5

Nuno Mendes, 6

Danilo Pereira, 4

Leandro Paredes, 4

Marco Verratti, 7 – He was used further forward than usual and often interchanged with Messi, almost taking up a centre-forward position at times, and he produced some delightful touches as usual (and got booked, as usual). Perhaps the only PSG player to meet expectations other than Mbappé.

Ángel Di María, 3 – No impact on the game generally and he was often isolated on his flank, unable to affect the game with most of Paris’ play going through Mbappé, and he should score early on, blazing over an Mbappé cross.

Kylian Mbappé, 8 – The source of all of PSG’s tangible goal threat. He should have had an assist as he turned Carvajal inside out for Di Maria’s early chance and later saw Courtois save well twice having often exposed Mendy and Carvajal. His pace and skill won the penalty which should have won the game  before embarrassing Vazquez to actually win it in injury time, brilliantly.

Lionel Messi, 3 – Was his worst Champions League knock out stage display in a decade? It was his dinked ball that put Mbappé in early on and he produced one delightful teasing second half cross but his passing was largely slow and imprecise and he failed to engineer space in central areas or work well with Verratti. Badly missed the penalty.

Others: Neymar 6, Gueye 6.
