Paulo Fonseca’s Lille future unclear amid West Ham interest

With his Lille side currently on course to finish fifth – sending them to the Conference League next season – Paulo Fonseca has impressed in his first season in Ligue 1, even if some near-misses could have placed Les Dogues even higher in the table. They sit two points off fourth-placed Monaco with two matchdays remaining.

According to L’Équipe this afternoon, though, the Portuguese manager would like to see the club show ambition in the upcoming transfer window before committing his future to the northerners. The former Roma and Shakhtar Donetsk coach has another year left on his contract, but has also been the subject of interest from West Ham.

The club’s transfer dealings have been the source of tensions between Fonseca and club president Olivier Létang in the past, and that frustration came to the fore again after a quiet winter window. As pointed out by Létang himself, the club are financially hamstrung by the FFP settlement they signed with UEFA, which he hopes to break free from in the coming weeks. He adds that they currently only have the league’s 8th largest wage bill. With key players such as Jonathan David set to leave as well, Fonseca is unlikely to see the club match his own squad-building ambitions this summer. West Ham, although interested in Fonseca, have yet to make a concrete offer to the 50-year-old.
