Cameroon goalkeeper André Onana is set to return to Ajax’s first team after the Dutch giants lost two keepers to injury in Portugal.
Ajax reserve keeper Jay Gorter injured his thumb early in the warm-up against Benfica before Remko Pasveer hurt his hand too; a move that leaves the club with no option but to field Onana.
“It was the last ball of the warm-up. The ball hit my finger, it happens often. Then it’s just a matter of taping it and playing. It was only after the game and late at night in the hotel that the pain increased and my finger had also become a lot thicker.
“It’s not surprising after his mistakes against Benfica that there are talks now whether Erik ten Hag should opt for André Onana. Still, I don’t believe Ten Hag will have doubts about Pasveer. He’s not the same type as Roger Schmidt @PSV.”

“I am very disappointed because we’re in a good run of form of form with a lot of important matches coming up in a short period,” the 38-year-old told the Ajax website.
Ajax first choice keeper Maarten Stekelenburg is out until the end of the season following a hip operation an option that will see Onana be between the sticks for Ajax in their next game.
