Official | Brentford sign goalkeeper Mark Flekken from Freiburg

SC Freiburg have today announced the departure of goalkeeper Mark Flekken to Premier League side Brentford for €13m.

The Dutch goalkeeper has featured 96 times for Breisgau since he joined the club from Duisburg in 2018. He became the vice-captain last season and would become a full international for the Netherlands in 2022.

Flekken would say upon his departure: “I experienced five incredibly intense years in Freiburg, with lows like my serious injury and many highs like the games in the Europa League, the DFB Cup final and great performances in the Bundesliga,” before continuing: “I would like to thank those responsible who have shown and kept their trust in me over the years. The time at the sports club shaped me and I am grateful to be able to experience this as an athlete and as a person.”

Freiburg’s director of sport Jochen Saier added: “Five years ago we showed Mark a clear perspective and we consistently followed this path together. He didn’t let setbacks throw him off course and we trusted him in difficult phases – that creates a bond.”

Saier would continue by saying: “Mark has been a strong supporter of our squad over the past two years. We would like to thank Mark for his work on and off the pitch and for the successful time we spent together at the sports club. We wish him all the best for his move to London.”

Freiburg, who have qualified for the Europa League for the second consecutive campaign, have a ready-made replacement within their squad. German under-21 goalkeeper Noah Atubolu (20) is expected to become the clubs first choice goalkeeper for their upcoming season.
