Newcastle United defender Kieran Trippier believes Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone would thrive in England.
Trippier left Atletico this month.
“I’d love to see him working in England,” declared Trippier to the Athletic.
“I know he was learning English about a year ago, and his partner speaks English. The thing about Simeone is that because he’s so passionate when he’s talking in the dressing room; I think it would get to him if he wasn’t completely fluent. But I would love to see him in the Premier League. I think everyone would.”
Simeone was criticised for his defensive-minded style of play when Atletico managed to knock out Liverpool from the Champions League in 2020, but Trippier defended his coach’s philosophy.
“It’s a bit unfair, because Simeone has been so successful over the last 11 years,” noted Trippier.
“He’s won eight trophies. I understand where [Jurgen] Klopp is coming from, but if you’re playing at Anfield you can’t go toe-to-toe with them because you’ll get punished.
“I remember Simeone telling us that night to keep our shape and try to catch them on the counter-attack and, at the end of the day, it’s about winning. Not everybody can play the Klopp way or the [Pep] Guardiola way. It’s just not realistic. Everybody has their own system or set-up, and Simeone’s is different. It’s worked for him.”
