Morais: Why see Xabi as future Real Madrid coach

Former Real Madrid assistant coach Jose Morais can see Xabi Alonso eventually returning to the Spanish giants.

The former Real midfielder is impressing as Bayer Leverkusen coach.

Morais recalled to AS: “I never discussed it with (Jose) Mourinho, but on a day-to-day basis you realised some things. With Xabi, for example. He was interested in the reasons for things. Look, there are many players to whom you give the report of the game they are going to play. They can read it or not, they do what they want. Later, some put more interest in the videos. You see how someone takes the report and leaves it in the box office and that’s it.

“Xabi was going further. He was tremendously curious. He wanted more. He learned it almost by heart, the two or three pages, and he wanted more. ‘Give me, give me, give me…’, he repeated.

“He cared about going further. Why this, why that? He wanted to understand. You gave him more and he kept it. He wanted a deep understanding of what was going to happen in the match. He was a player of tremendous curiosity. In that squad there was another one like him, it was (Esteban) Granero. He also had that curiosity. Later, Xabi was a leader in positioning, his own and that of his teammates.

“Sure, I had that feeling. If someone from that locker room could become a coach, Xabi was one of them. Granero was also a good tactical student.”

Morais added: “He has learned with the best in the world and then he has also been with (Pep) Guardiola, who is very good. Afterwards, it is very important to have been at Madrid. He knows the fans, the club. He is a guy with personality, a leader. He has capabilities and I like him. If he has to be Madrid’s coach, it will be. I will be supporting him.”
