Michael Owen: Liverpool are still the best team in Europe

Despite their Champions League final defeat to Real Madrid on Saturday, former Liverpool striker Michael Owen has boldly stated that the Reds are still “the finest team in Europe.”

Jurgen Klopp’s team dominated Los Blancos at the Stade de France for long stretches in a match that started 36 minutes later than planned due to horrific scenes of a disturbance outside the stadium.

Liverpool, however, were unable to break through an inspired Thibaut Courtois, who made nine stops in the 90 minutes, and Real had a goal controversially called out for offside at the end of the first half.

Owen is still of the belief that the Reds are at the top of the continent, though, telling BT Sport: “Liverpool are still the best team in Europe,” after Saturday’s loss.

Carlo Ancelotti’s side opened the scoring with Vinicius Junior, and Liverpool were unable to claw their way back into the game as Real won their 14th continental title.

“I don’t think Liverpool did anything wrong. 24 shots – it was just one of those days. Ancelotti got his tactics spot on tonight.”

During the final, Liverpool issued a statement calling for a formal investigation into the disgusting scenes involving fans before kickoff, calling the events “unacceptable.”
