Max Eberl defends RB Leipzig signing players from RB Salzburg

Speaking to DAZN, RB Leipzig’s Max Eberl defended the club signing players from RB Salzburg after initially being against the idea when he was at Borussia Mönchengladbach.

When asked on the strategy, Eberl said: “I’m trying to get the best players to Leipzig. If the best player plays for a possible replacement of Konrad Laimer in Salzburg, then I will continue to look around there.”

The sporting director had previously been critical of the Red Bull model in 2016. During his time as sporting director at Gladbach, Eberl said: “What bothers me about RB is this displacement of players from Salzburg to Leipzig and from Leipzig to Salzburg. This has a dull aftertaste for me, because they basically have two squads,”

During his interview with DAZN before Leipzig played Borussia Dortmund, Eberl retracted the statement: “I said something about it at the time as a counterparty – we are seven years ahead, the world has continued to turn. In the end, Salzburg, like any other club, is also a club where we look. Accordingly, we have no advantage, but it is simply the best player who suits Leipzig very well for the new season.”

Last weekend, Leipzig announced the signing of Nicolas Seiwald from Salzburg which is the 20th transfer between the clubs. The signing of Seiwald is also the second Salzburg to Leipzig transfer of this coming summer with Benjamin Šeško also set to move to the Bundesliga.

Other players to have moved from Salzburg to Leipzig include Dayot Upamecano, Dominik Szoboszlai, Naby Keïta and Amadou Haidara. While players such as Xaver Schlager and Kevin Kampl have taken detours before returning to the Red Bull model.
