Manchester United Treble hero Jaap Stam has questioned Ajax’s €50m valuation for Lisandro Martinez.
The Argentina defender is wanted by United and Arsenal, with the former having met Ajax’s asking price this week.
Stam told AD of the 24 year-old: “Whether Martínez is worth fifty million is difficult to say. These kinds of amounts have become normal. Especially in England.
“I have become a fan of his. I think he’s a fantastic guy, with a good temperament and a winning mentality. For trainers, they are great players to work with.
“You can therefore see that Ten Hag clearly aims to dominate matches and control the half of the opponent. Then you play with a lot of space in the back and then you need players who are reasonably fast and not afraid to cover. (Tyrell) Malacia has that and Martínez certainly.”
On Martinez standing at 1.75m, Stam also said: “Back in the day, defenders in England couldn’t be big enough. Two metres was good, also to be able to head away many balls. Now most clubs and trainers want to play football.
“That doesn’t mean you don’t have to defend. Count on it. There are many fast attackers who are merciless in counters. What is therefore important is that a defender has cleverness. Quickly read where balls go, a small push or a push. Then you don’t even have to get into duels.”
