Liverpool book Champions League final spot after surviving serious scare against Villarreal

Liverpool survived a scare against Villarreal to book a place in the Champions League.

The Reds copped two first-half goals before rolling past Villarreal in the second-half to claim a 3-2 victory in Spain.

Jurgen Klopp’s side won the first leg 2-0 at Anfield but their backs were immediately against the wall at El Madrigal when Boulaye Dia converted Etienne Capoue’s pass to score after three minutes of play.

Liverpool’s advantage was then completed wiped when ex-Arsenal midfielder Francis Coquelin with four minutes until half-time.

The visitors looked completely rattled as El Madrigal bounced in song and dance.

But this was not Liverpool’s first rodeo and they came back swinging in the second stanza, pulling a goal back through Fabinho on the 62nd minute mark.

The Brazilian was played in by Mohamed Salah and rifled a shot through the legs of Villarreal goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli.

Half-time substitute Luis Diaz, who changed the complexion of the game with his efforts, restored Liverpool’s two-goal advantage with a header at the back post.

Sadio Mane secured Liverpool’s place in their third Champions League final in five seasons with a third goal after taking the ball around Rulli with 16 minutes remaining.

The Reds will play either Manchester City or Real Madrid at the Stade de France in Paris on Saturday, 28 May.
