Karl-Heinz Rummenigge on Leroy Sané: “It was obviously a wake up call for him.”

Speaking in an interview with DPA, former Bayern Munich CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge discussed the change in form of Germany international Leroy Sané, who was booed by fans against FC Köln in August.

“What happened at the beginning of the season, with the whistles from the fans and criticism from experts, was helpful,” said Rummenigge. “It was obviously a wake up call for him, along the lines of, ‘I have to change and also fulfill the expectations of the club and the talent that God gave me.’ Now he fulfills them.

“When we signed Leroy in 2020, we invested a lot of money and faith in him. It may have taken him the first year, not so much because of his cruciate ligament injury. He had to get out of his comfort zone a little.”

Under Julian Nagelsmann, Sané has now established himself within the squad, scoring 12 and creating 13 in 29 games in all competitions for Bayern Munich.

“He’s become a completely different player,” added Rummenigge. “He takes part in the game in a completely different way. He often lived a wallflower existence on the right wing last season, now he wants to have the ball. Not only is he quick and dangerous, but he’s also a strong runner and helps out in defence too.”
