“It’s obviously a pleasure to knock out Paris”: Galtier on Nice’s Coupe de France victory

Nice boss Christophe Galtier spoke to Le Parisien today about his side’s penalty-shootout victory over the 14-time winners of the Coupe de France last night.

“It was a really good performance. We were able to seize the opportunity to play a PSG side weakened by injuries,” explained the former Lille coach.

“It’s obviously a pleasure to knock out Paris. We know their relationship with the Coupe de France.” Having enjoyed the victory, Galtier moved on to the quarter-final against Marseille: “In one week, we have a very intense match against Marseille, who also have a great history with this trophy.”

In relation to the selection of goalkeeper Marcin Bulka, who is currently on loan to Les Aiglons from PSG and saved penalties from Leandro Paredes and Xavi Simons, the latter of which sent Nice through, Galtier said his choice “was linked to the fact that I needed to see Marcin face a more important opponent than Cholet in the previous round. I played Marcin because he had Covid, unlike Walter Benitez. I wanted him to have his bearings if he had to play in the league,” should the first choice keeper become unavailable.

Following Xavi Simons’ crucial miss, Galtier explained that “you have to take the weight of elimination off his shoulders. He is a young boy who went with nerve, with a desire to succeed in his shot.”
