Harry Kane moves closer to breaking Wayne Rooney’s England record

Tottenham Hotspur striker and England captain Harry Kane is fast closing in Wayne Rooney’s scoring record for the Three Lions.

The 28-year-old continued with his prolific form for Gareth Southgate’s side, scoring the winning goal from the spot in a 2-1 come-from-behind win over Switzerland at Wembley on Saturday evening.

It was a monumental goal as it moved the striker to 49 goals, level with England legend Bobby Charlton.

Kane now needs just five to draw level with Wayne Rooney, who leads the charts with 53 goals.

Interestingly, Kane has managed the tally having played just 68 matches since making his debut in 2015, whereas it took Rooney 120 appearances to set the record.

Kane will have seven more chances to break Rooney’s record before England heads to the 2022 World Cup, starting with Tuesday night’s friendly match against Ivory Coast.

“It’s amazing company to be with, I’m super proud to be amongst those names. But you’ve always got to look forward to the next one. It’s a big year ahead, chance of quite a few more caps and a few more goals. We’ll see where it takes us,” Kane told Sky Sports following the win over Switzerland.

Man United left-back Luke Shaw scored England’s opener in the win over Switzerland, canceling out Breel Embolo’s first-half goal.
