Speaking at his unveiling as Hertha Berlin head coach, Felix Magath discussed his coaching style, returning to football and the goal of keeping the capital club in the Bundesliga.
“We all need to work together to get out of this difficult situation,” said Magath. “It’s not about myself or Fredi, only Hertha BSC. Achieving our goal will only happen when we are fully concentrated on the task and focus on the essentials.”
The former Bayern Munich, Wolfsburg and Fulham manager has been in the sport for a long time. “I’ve done nothing but football for my whole life, I love this game,” said the 68-year-old. “I think I’ve proved before that I can adapt to different situations and there’s something here which suits me. I want to keep Hertha in the league.”
Magath will take charge of Hertha until the end of the season, with the goal of avoiding relegation. “From the start, we only talked about these final eight Bundesliga games and keeping the club up,” added Magath. “I’m not looking at anything else. I’ll put everything into ending this winless run and staying in the division.”
Often criticised for his disciplined approach, Magath added: “Discipline belongs to sport, especially team sports. I have learned that over the years and I’ll be asking for that from my players here at Hertha. I don’t do it for myself, the players have to understand it.”
