Exclusive: Moses Simon warns ‘very important’ for Nigeria to overcome Egypt & Salah

Moses Simon admits Nigeria must focus on a ‘very important’ African Cup of Nations opener against Egypt.

The Super Eagles are aiming to win their fourth AFCON crown after success in 1980, 1994 and 2013.

They must first advance through Group D which features Egypt, Guinea-Bissau and Sudan.

A mouth-watering clash against Egypt awaits in the opening group stage match in Garoua on Tuesday.

The Pharaohs hold the record for the most AFCON titles with seven and are considered one of the favourites in 2021 due to the presence of Liverpool superstar Mohamed Salah and Arsenal midfielder Mohamed Elneny.

Simon has told TribalFootball.com that Nigeria are confident they can go all the way in Cameroon, but the Nantes winger knows they must get off to the best start.

“The first game is very important,” Simon said. “We all know that Egypt are a good side. Everyone talks about Mohammed Salah.

“With due respect, Salah is a very good player and we respect him for all his achievements.

“But of course, during the game, we will see what it takes. We will focus on our game, not on Mohammed Salah.

“Every player is dangerous in Egypt, likewise the Super Eagles.”

Following the Egypt clash, Augustine Eguavoen’s side will play Sudan on Saturday and Guinea-Bissau next Wednesday.

Egypt and Nigeria are considered tournament favourites, but they are not alone.

Defending champions Algeria, Ivory Coast and Senegal are also contenders to become champions in Cameroon.
