Exclusive: Ex-Forest striker Campbell delighted for Cooper after Liverpool shock ‘the right man for the job’

Former Nottingham Forest striker Kevin Campbell was delighted for Steve Cooper after Saturday’s shock defeat of Liverpool.

Forest stunned the visitors 1-0 at the City Ground, with former Liverpool striker Taiwo Awoniyi scoring the only goal of the game.

Forest’s manager had gone into the game under pressure, despite having penned a new deal this month, but Campbell insists backing Cooper was always the right decision by the club’s board.

Speaking to Tribalfootball.com on behalf of Mr Gamble, Campbell said: “He’s the right man for the job that’s for sure.

“We can talk about keeping them up, but I think the key is having the right man for the job.

“Nottingham Forest don’t have a divine right to stay in the Premier League and we’ve seen plenty of teams’ yoyo.

“Fulham and Bournemouth are examples of that, this is Nottingham Forest’s first time in the Premier League for 20+ years.

“It’s not just going to happen for you overnight.

“The reason why I say Steve Cooper is the right man for the job is because when he first went to Nottingham Forest, they were rock bottom.

“He’s worked magic to firstly get them out of trouble in the Championship and then to get them into the Premier League.”

Indeed, for the work Cooper has put in lifting Forest back into the Premier League, Campbell insists granting him time to gel a quickly assembled squad was the right thing to do.

“He’s the right man for the job, there’s no doubt about it,” continued Campbell.

“If the worst was to happen and they were unfortunately to go through the trapdoor back to the Championship, then they already have a ready-made manager who knows how to get them out.

“We’ve seen teams yoyo a little bit before they could stabilise and that might be Nottingham Forest.

“I don’t want it to be, but that might be Nottingham Forest and if it happens, then Steve Cooper is the man for the job, that’s for sure.”
