European Roundup: Guedes fires Valencia to Copa del Rey final, Juventus seal late win

Goncalo Guedes scored a magnificent goal to send Valencia through to the Copa del Rey final on Wednesday night with a 2-1 win over Athletic Bilbao.

Last month’s first leg clash between the two sides at San Mames ended 1-1, and Guedes’s thunderbolt in the first half settled the tie, ending Billbao’s run.

The Los Leones had reached the last three finals of the competition, losing on both occasions to Real Sociedad and Barcelona.

Valencia will be hoping for a repeat of their last final three years ago when they stunned Barcelona to lift the title.

Valencia will face the winners of the other semi-final between Real Betis and Rayo Vallecano, with the final set for April.

With the likes of Barcelona, Real Madrid, and Sevilla all having been knocked out, Real Betis, who play on Thursday night, remain the highest-ranked team and remain by far the favourites.

In Italy, Lorenzo Venuti’s late own goal earned Juventus a 1-0 win over Fiorentina in the first leg of the Italian Cup semifinal on Wednesday night.

Venuti converted Juan Cuadrado’s cross into his own in the first minute of stoppage time, giving the Old Lady a crucial away win.
