Didier Deschamps says Randal Kolo Muani “deserved to score” against The Netherlands

Speaking at his press conference before taking on Ireland tomorrow night, Didier Deschamps was effusive in his praise for Randal Kolo Muani, after the Eintracht Frankfurt man impressed in France’s resounding 4-0 win over The Netherlands at the Stade de France on Friday.

Although the former Nantes man was unable to find the net, he was instrumental in a devastating counter-attacking set-up led by captain Kylian Mbappé, and has ostensibly emerged as the favourite to take up the number nine role in the PSG man’s famous “pivot gang” system. Notably, he showed good awareness in letting Aurélien Tchouaméni’s through ball run straight past him to put Mbappé through on goal to score France’s third of the night.

For Deschamps – his remarks reported by RMC – Kolo Muani “deserved to score, but still did some very good things. He’s a different profile, and that gives me options as well”.

The national team manager also highlighted the forward’s versatility, given he can play across the frontline, which allows for a certain tactical flexibility: “He has the capacity to play [on the wing] with his speed. He likes it there and I’ve played him there before, even if with his club he’s been repositioned into the middle. On Friday, his position wasn’t a fixed one, along with Kylian and Kingsley [Coman’s]. Not having set positions is an advantage for us.”
