Didier Deschamps says Kylian Mbappé could become France captain

With Hugo Lloris and Raphaël Varane having announced their international retirements in the wake of the World Cup, the French national team now finds itself without its long-time captain and vice-captain, heading into a new era.

In his wide-ranging interview with Le Parisien, Didier Deschamps is notably asked about who could be the Tottenham Hotspurs goalkeeper’s successor – “I know which players could be captain. But I’ll have to speak with them first.”

According to sources contacted by Get French Football news, Kylian Mbappé is in line to take up the armband, at just 24 years old. Asked about whether the Paris Saint-Germain forward could become captain, Deschamps has confirmed him as a candidate: “Kylian Mbappé is one who could be, of course.”

The double World Cup winner goes on to say that, in his view, Mbappé is the best player in the world – “What he’s doing compared to others at his age is exceptional” – and is already among some of the very best to have played for the French national team.

Deschamps also underlines Mbappé’s qualities off the pitch:

“His maturity, his intelligence. He masters the way he communicates perfectly, he speaks multiple languages. He has this unique ability to render very complicated things very simple. Some people say he is selfish in the way he plays. I disagree. He has, along with other players, this capacity to make the difference on his own. But he always does it for the collective goal.”
